The development of the telephone has been very substantial over the few decades. All through the twentieth century there were developments being made in the telephone but in the 90s the biggest changes started to happen, particularly the mass instigation of the mobile telephone, also known as a cell phone. This new from of phone grew rapidly and it has now reached the point where nearly everyone owns their own mobile telephone!

Telephones have gone from being a very rare piece of equipment that could contact anyone else with a phone and speak to them, to now being one of the most advanced pieces of technology in the world. They now have the ability to not only talk and text, but to also access the internet and use some very advanced software on them for games or other applications.

Newest Technologies

There are a lot of very large and rich companies that sell nothing but phones which shows just how big the market if for them, especially when aimed at the younger people of today and the people who always want to have the most advanced technology available to them. A lot of people are now changing their Cell-phone every year or even more frequently in some cases.

New and exciting features for phones are being worked on every single day, and the newest phenomenon is the application feature of phones where they can run many advanced programs for thousands of different purposes all on the same device which they used to ring people or send text messages. We are now in the age of the 3-G (third generation of phones) but it will not be too many years now until we reach the fourth generation where every phone will have access to anywhere in the world instantly (have a look at the iphone statistics). It is no wonder that the elderly people struggle to keep up with modern technology when it is developing so quickly.

Only one century ago it was impossible to communicate with people in other countries, let alone on the other side of the world and the only way to do it was by letter or message that took a long time to get there as they had to be carried by hand or horse. This has changed dramatically in the last one hundred years and probably the biggest change was the introduction of the telephone! This has now made it possible to contact anyone anywhere in the World within a maximum of two minutes. This has revolutionised how we communicate as a species and now people are in regular communication every day despite the fact that they live on opposite sides of the world to each other.

Ground-breaking technology

The very first telephone was invented in the 1870s but the inventor is disputed because there were many scientists working on the communication of sound waves through radiation, although most commonly the invention of the telephone is accredited to Alexander Graham Bell.

Telephones have now become vitally important to the running of the modern day world and without them many businesses and companies would fall apart. They are used to regularly that nobody can really remember a time without then (especially the teenagers and youth of today who live on the phone normally). They have become more and more popular as they have been made both easier to use and cheaper to afford. They have gone from being large awkward things with a turn dial that was hard to operate to digital screened small and sleek pieces of kit which stand meekly in the corner of every home and building.

The microphone has done a lot to help effective communication between people in two main ways, due to the two main types of microphone. Firstly there is one kind that is put onto a stage for a singer to sing into or a speaker to speak into which will enhance the volume of their voice. This enables people to hear the speaker loud and clear with the use of the microphone and also makes sure that the speaker is heard above everyone else in the room. This helps for effective communication because it means that people will have to concentrate on what is being said.

Nothing else can really be heard and therefore this means that they will take in the words being said far better than if they were listening to their friends talk next to them. Many people use a microphone when making a speech now because their voice can also be played out through speakers all around the area. This can be a very useful technique because it makes the listener feel surrounded and like what he hears. They have to listen which makes them take it in far better.

Breaching the Gap

The second type of microphone is the one which can be found on any computer or laptop. It can be used to communicate to people all around the world with just a few clicks of the mouse.

A microphone being able to be fitted onto (or into in many cases) a car is a far better having to type out every word that is being said, and also it is a well known fact that less than 10% of what is being said comes in the world, tone accounts for 35% which can be heard over a microphone but cannot be heard or indicated when typing a message to someone.

Being able to communicate between people can be one of the most effective life skills which can be learnt. To do this in the best and most professional way the speaker must be able to keep calm in situations where others are going to strongly disagree with their point of view. This is where some people struggle when trying to communicate because they aget in a lather quickly or get angry when someone else disagrees with what he is saying. This is a very bad thing to happen because obviously people aren’t going to agree straight away. It is the speaker’s job to make them see that he is right and persuade them. This won’t be possible if the speaker is too angry to get their thoughts across.

Controlling Anger by talking about it

Anger management courses exist to help out the people who quite often will struggle with controlling their temper, because without them these people would not be able to hold a conversation without getting angry. This won't give any sort of useful communication at all! Anger management courses work hard to find out what it is that is making the individual angry and then try to keep their mind of it or teach them how to deal with it without getting angry. This will enable them to carry on living a normal life while being able to control their temper.

Being angry is one of the worst ways to get a pint across in an argument because all the meaning of the words being said is lost in the volume or tone of the voice. That just becomes intimidating and not persuading at all. That's why it is important to be able to speak effectively and remain calm at all times, especially when speaking.

The debating society is not a new idea in the high schools of the United States, not by any stretch of the imagination. However the reputation and the way people are viewing them is starting to change. In the past it was seen as a place for the smart of even “geeky” kids to go and use their knowledge to outsmart less fortunate people. However now it has become a place where people can win no matter what side they are on as long as they have the right skills. More and more young people are becoming involved with Debating societies than ever before which is great to see and the more people that get involved the more everyone benefits from the system, which is why it is their in the first place.

Putting a Point Across

Debating is a superb way to learn how to communicate effectively because it teaches the participants to see both sides of every story, and if they can see them then they can fight against any opposition which helps greatly when trying to sway people who are unsure about the propositions being put forward. Being able to persuade other people is a very employable skill and can also be very useful for the individual which is why there is a lot of drive behind debating societies in school.

Being able to debate will also help to make the people far more confident within themselves which will help them a lot in later life in general but also in portraying themselves in a good light to the right people and everyone knows how important first impressions can be. The people who are the best in the debate society will be the ones who end up going out their and making something of themselves because they can make other people believe in what they are saying which is a talent some business people would kill for.

Out of all the ways of being able to communicate effectively, being able to put a point across to someone who doesn’t agree with it is one of if not the most important skill to possess. The skill of being able to debate is highly sought after in the world of power and communication because if someone can make people believe the same things that they do just by talking to them then they will be very valuable to a wide range of people and will be in tough demand. This is why teaching children to debate, has become such an important feature of the High Schools in the United States of America.

Debating in Schools

Debate clubs are starting up and being encouraged to grow in every school across the nation, because if all of the young people going through the education system can come out of it not just with knowledge and opinions, but with the skill to be able to persuade other people to agree with what they think then America will do very well for itself over the next few decades. These debate clubs in each of the schools are pitted against each other in traditional competition to eventually find the champion debate team and this competitive edge encourages more people to get involved and work hard to reach the top. It is also taught in collages for the same reasons and seems to have been embraced by the nation. The competitive side of it seems to be helping to bring in far more young and excited people and teaches them a very useful life skill. Being able to debate will be very useful in many situations throughout life and employers are strongly looking for people with this skill no matter what industry they are in.

Being able to communicate effectively between large groups of people, either internally between the members of the group or externally, when portraying the decision of the group to everyone else involved, is a very useful skill. It is particularly important in places such as the European Parliament which is one of the strong legislatures out of all of the powerful organisations around the world. Along with the European Council and Commission the European Parliament (often shorten to the name of Europal) is the parliamentary institution elected from the European Union to fairly represent all of its members.

How the European Parliament works

Every since 1979 there has been an election for the many members of the European Parliament which has taken place every five years without fail. Surprisingly the European Parliament does not have any legislative powers; instead it relies on the joint strength of all of its members and is still seen as the driving force out of all the institutions across the whole of Europe. It has control of the European budget and also supervises many of the Government systems in its member countries. The elections which take place are ran the same way as in most countries, with there several parties who stand for election and one ends up coming out as a winner and the leader of that party becomes the President of the European Parliament. All decisions have to be voted on though and have a majority vote to be carried.

In a continent such as Europe it is very important for this Parliament to work very well and to be able to communicate with the many countries it counts among its member so that everyone knows what is going on in the current affairs. This is particularly hard in a continent such as Europe with so many smaller countries and a few countries dominating the whole of the continent (particularly the western side of Europe in this case).

The General Assembly Hall with seating for just over 1800 people is easily the largest room in the United Nations. It acts as a conference room, and contains the symbol for the United Nations, which is the globe seen from the top, (looking down over the North Pole) which is one to make sure that no country seems more important then any other by being in the middle and means almost every continent can be visible still. The room is a symbol of peace, within it there are no gifts or donations from any nation represented in the room and the two murals on the wall were donated anonymously so that there is no sign of favouritism or any bias in the room. The room stands for peace and equality, it is a place where anyone present can stand up, make themselves heard and put their point across in a place where it will be listened to and taken seriously.

Communicating to the World

There are 191 countries represented in the United Nations, and the General Assembly Hall is a place where all of them are considered equal no matter how rich, large or powerful they may be. Not only is the room a very effective place to communicate within because everyone will listen to everyone else and they are all equals, but it is also a great tool for communicating with the rest of the world. Any problem big enough to be dealt with by the United Nations normally involves several countries or even continents and the decisions made by the United Nations, although have no legal backing, are heard by the whole world and whatever recommendations they make, the world will listen and take them seriously. The voice of the world speaks from the General Assembly Hall.

The Speakers' corner is found in Hyde Park in London. It is an open paved area where speakers can address an audience in the open air. Over the years, the corner has been used as a place for crowds of single speakers to make them heard and it has become a very effective way of communicating with either an audience or with society as a whole.

History of the "Corner of Communication"

In the past, Speakers' corner has played host to such famous speakers as George Orwell among many others and some talks are given by groups or their leaders such as the Socialist Party of Great Britain. It's a common place to find protests or even riots in the past, partly because it has become an established place to let feelings and opinions out for everyone to hear. Furthermore because they know they won't get noticed there as it is expected to be one of the first places to see protestors during any major event or decision made or based in London.

Places like Speakers' corner have become a great way to get points across, people can gather to listen to the speaker and they can address a huge crowd because of the large space of Hyde Park included in the Speakers' corner. While anyone is talking the rest of the crowd stand silent and listen, it has become a reverence to hang on the speakers every word, which is a great way to communicate a point to a large group of people. Speeches given by inspiring speakers have always had a deep meaning with the people listening to them and they are a great place to command an audience, which is why speakers are still going there to make themselves heard.

During the Indian independence movement, Gandhi, (full name Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi) was the leader of India and was one of the most inspirational men ever to have lived. He managed to unite an entire nation through a policy based entirely on nonviolence and he used his words to bring everyone together on the same front. He has been officially honoured as being the father of the nation of India and they are proud to have him as their symbol of peace. Gandhi dedicated the early years of his adult life to the discovery of truth, he believed that everyone was entitled to know everything and that truth should be the most important factor in common knowledge. He often spoke about how people should work together to learn and move forward as a team and not as individuals!

The Father of a Nation

In later life obviously Gandhi turned his skills to the political machine, and was the first person to ever initiate the nonviolence concept into the political system on a wide scale and tried to turn India into the nation of peace. Even when moving on into this new field he still brought his philosophy of truth always winning with him and tried to promote it to the entire nation. He was famously quoted for having said “an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind” which shows how he felt about violence. He spoke to his nation frequently about how they could move forward in peace as one if they worked together. These speeches he used to make to his nation (which were some of the most viewed things to have ever happened at that time, with people coming from all over the country to see him talk his inspirational words) were his tool of peace. He was an amazing and skilled man with the ability to move with words what nobody else could.
